Orthoceras

Orthoceras

Ancient wisdom and grounding. As a 400+ million-year-old fossil, Orthoceras carries the energy of ancient life and Earth’s past. Metaphysically, it is said to enhance life-force energy and survival instincts, grounding the user in the stability of Earth while offering insight from ancient knowledge. It promotes transformation and personal growth by helping one release fear of the unknown and learn from the past, encouraging resilience and evolution of the soul.

The fossilized remains of an extinct nautiloid cephalopod from the Ordovician period (approx. 485–443 million years ago). Orthoceras fossils appear as elongated cone-shaped shells (often black and white in cross-section) embedded in a limestone or shale matrix. The shells are composed primarily of aragonite (a form of calcium carbonate) that has petrified over eons. Major deposits come from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco (home to many polished Orthoceras in black marble), as well as Scandinavia and the Baltic region. The fossil and its host rock are quite hard once silicified or calcified, making them durable enough to polish into decorative items.

Regarded as a powerhouse of vitality and healing due to its “life force” energies. Healers say it activates the root chakra to increase one’s energy, stamina, and resistance to illness. It is often used to alleviate fatigue and encourage a healthy outlook on life. Emotionally, Orthoceras is praised for stabilizing mood swings and relieving anxiety – it’s thought to reduce stress and impart confidence by connecting one to Earth’s grounding energy. Some also believe it aids in detoxification and supports skeletal health (given its relation to calcium carbonate), although such uses are more symbolic than medicinal. Overall it’s considered a stress-reducer that grounds and strengthens the body.
